Postpartum Pelvic Floor Recovery: What It Really Looks Like

Jul 13, 2026

At your six week checkup you got the all-clear. Cleared to exercise, cleared to lift, cleared to get back to life. So why do you still leak when you sneeze, feel a strange heaviness by the end of the day, or sense that your core just isn’t connecting the way it used to? On paper you’re recovered. In your body, you know something still isn’t right.

You’re not imagining it, and you’re not behind. Postpartum pelvic floor recovery takes far longer than six weeks, and this is exactly where pelvic floor therapy comes in. It’s some of the most rewarding work we do at Mitchell Holistic Health here in Onalaska.

The six week myth

Here’s the thing almost no one explains. That six week visit clears you to resume activity. It doesn’t mean your tissues, your core, and your pelvic floor have fully recovered. Growing and birthing a baby, whether vaginally or by C-section, is a major event for the muscles and connective tissue that support your entire midsection. Real recovery keeps unfolding for many months, and it deserves more than a quick green light.

Postpartum Pelvic Floor Recovery: What It Really Looks Like

What your pelvic floor actually does

Your pelvic floor is a hammock of muscles slung across the base of your pelvis. It supports your bladder, uterus, and bowel, it works hand in hand with your deep core and your breath, and it helps you stay continent through everything from a sneeze to a sprint. Pregnancy stretches and loads it for months, and birth asks even more of it. After all that, it often needs to be retrained, not just rested.

Signs postpartum pelvic floor therapy could help you

  • Leaking urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh, jump, or run
  • A feeling of heaviness, pressure, or “something falling” in the pelvis
  • Pain or discomfort with intimacy
  • Low back or hip pain that lingered long after birth
  • A core that feels disconnected, or a belly that still domes or cones (a sign of diastasis recti)
  • Simply not feeling strong or confident in your body again

None of these are things you just have to live with because you’re a mom now. They’re common, and common doesn’t mean normal or permanent.

The Mitchell Holistic Health difference

Our pelvic health therapist looks at the whole person, not just one muscle. We connect your breath, your core, your posture, and your daily movement so your recovery actually holds. Warm, unhurried, and never one-size-fits-all.

Postpartum Pelvic Floor Recovery: What It Really Looks Like

What pelvic floor therapy really involves

First, let’s clear up a myth. Pelvic floor therapy isn’t just kegels, and for some women kegels are actually the wrong move. Good care starts with a thorough assessment of how your pelvic floor, core, and breath are working together. From there we coordinate breathing and pressure management, retrain the muscles to both contract and fully relax, address any diastasis, and then progressively build you back toward the things you love, whether that’s running, lifting, or simply chasing your kids without a second thought.

It’s never too late

One of our favorite things to tell moms is that there’s no expiration date on this work. Whether you’re six weeks postpartum or your “baby” is now in middle school, your pelvic floor can still be assessed, retrained, and strengthened. So many women carry these symptoms for years assuming the window closed. It didn’t.

You poured everything into bringing your little one into the world. Let us help you feel strong, steady, and like yourself in your own body again.
